Description:

This is an 1890s collection of Native American myths and fairy tales. Ostensibly written for a younger audience, these 46 fables are recounted in traditional storyteller/oral history style, making them appealing to readers and listeners of any age. The stories are accompanied by numerous illustrations.

The author writes in the Preface:

As you read these stories, think of the time when this great country of ours had no cities, no railroads, no telegraphs, telephones or schools – when not a white man lived here.

Then the dense forests, wide prairies, deep blue rivers and high mountains belonged to the red man.

These stories I have written for you were then told to Indian boys and girls. Some were told in the far north, some in the south, others in the west, and others in the east.

And, as we read, let us remember that in the long time ago the children believed these stories which are to us like fairy tales.
