This 441 foot Merchant cargo ship was built in Los Angeles by California Shipbuilding Corp and launched on September 23, 1942. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. The vessel survived the war and was sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1961.

General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876), a Union cavalry general of German ancestry was a West Point graduate (class of 1861) and served as an aide to general officers at Bull Run and Antietam. He became a effective cavalry officer who fought at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg,The Wilderness, Yellow Tavern, and Trevilian Station. He also fought for General Early and General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Later, he participated in the Siege of Petersburg and his troops help corner General Lee's forces at Appomattox.
