Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville (1818-1881) was a noted French chemist known for many important discoveries, including the production of aluminium in bulk quantities.

The medal is signed J Martel.  Jan and Joël Martel (1896-1966) were French sculptors and identical twin brothers.  They collaborated on most works.
