The Guard continues the almost two-century-long tradition of Serbian Guard units.
In the First World War (1914-1918), members of the Guard went through all the more important battles and hardships of the Serbian army and contributed to its victorious onslaught, from the Thessaloniki front to the free homeland. It will forever be remembered that, in the winter of 1915 and 1916, during the retreat towards Greece, Serbian guards carried their aged and sick king over the frozen Albanian mountains.
During the Second World War, on November 1, 1944, the Guards Brigade of the Yugoslav People's Army was formed from the Escort Battalion of the NOV and POJ Supreme Headquarters.
The current Guard was created by the re-formation of the Guard Brigade into Guard on November 30, 2006.
