Japanese Hanging Scroll Vtg Boy Reading Walking Ninomiya Sontoku SC946

Description

Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a young man in the countryside reading while carrying a bundle of twigs. It is likely a portrait of Ninomiya Sontoku, a Japanese agriculturist whose statues have been installed in many schools in Japan. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
