Antique German Konig and Wernicke Black doll with Flirty Eyes19 inch

Germany, known as the center of the toy-making industry, is well-known for making beautiful black (a.k.a. brown and mulatto) dolls dating back to the 1800's or earlier. 

A beautiful example of two German dolls by Konig and Wernicke grace the cover of Black Dolls an Identification and Value Guide 1820-1991 by Myla Perkins.  Perkins describes this pair as,"Adorable flirty-eyed toddler boy and girl with Negroid features.” 

The sweet girl for your consideration is 19 inches or 48 cms tall. Often described as having a bisque head, these dolls were the first to receive hard plastic heads for durability. She has dark brown glass flirty eyes, open mouth with two upper teeth, curly synthetic wig.  She has a composition five-piece toddler body.  She was made during the 1920’s.  

Marks:  K W/221/46, on back of her neck.

She is dressed in a spring time cotton dress with strawberry design and red satin bows. She has a tulle underskirt, lace trimmed panties and Cinderella shoes.

She is a sweet doll for your collection.
