Description

An antique mid 19th century surveyors telescope theodolite by Cail of Newcastle upon Tyne in it's original fitted wooden case as retailed by T.B. Winter of 55 Grey St, Newcastle, and comprising a brass, four thumb screw adjustable mount and a telescope tube with a bubble level mounted on top, a sliding objective shade hood with drop down cover, and a knob operated rack & pinion extending focus tube with a threaded eye piece (there are 4 screws on the end of the tube, not sure if these are for adjustment or perhaps for attaching a cross hair ?), signed 'CAIL, Newcastle upon Tyne' to one side, circa mid 1800s

Size : Approx 10 1/2" long closed.

Condition : For Restoration. The rack & pinion focus operates smoothly, the bubble level is fine, but the threaded eyepiece has no glass (the only optics are the objective lens - see last photo for tube interior. I'm not sure if there should be other lens in the tube ?). Cosmetically, the original japanned finish is very worn & scratched and the brass mount is Very heavily tarnished. The box is structurally sound with it's original swing catches, lock (no key), but has expected marks / wear / scratches and staining consistent with it's age and use - please see all 24 photos below (message me if you require additional photos / info, etc).
