This is the Zippo lighter
that saved the life of an American soldier after his entire squad was ambushed
by the Viet Cong.
The
lighter was a gift from the soldier’s wife on his birthday a couple of years
ago. He treasured the lighter very much and always carried it with him to all
the fierce battlefields he had been through. Having it by his side brought him
encouragement and belief, reminding him of his family and giving him motivation
to fight against the enemy.
On a
rainy day, the soldier's squad was ambushed intensely in the deep jungle. Many
of his comrades sacrificed their lives, and he himself was critically injured.
With a severe leg injury, he couldn't move, and there was no one around. He had
to lie still to avoid the enemy’s attention.
Waiting
until the Viet Cong withdrew completely, the soldier tried to contact his
comrades in despair but received no response. He found himself trapped alone in
the jungle with his bleeding legs.
On the
verge of death, he thought of his newlywed wife and their soon-to-be-born
child. He wished he could see them again, just one more time. The soldier
waited for his comrades in despair until he was exhausted. Knowing that he was
nearing death, he used the lighter to light one last cigarette.
Unfortunately,
because the cigarette was wet, it wouldn't light. In despair, the soldier
looked at the Zippo and burst into tears. He still let the Zippo burn, holding
it tightly in his hand, and then passed out.
When he
woke up, he found himself in a hospital. It turned out that one of his comrades
had come back to find him. Thanks to the Zippo accidentally setting fire to the
leaves nearby, they were able to locate him. Just a few minutes later, the
soldier would have died.
After
that incident, the soldier appreciated the lighter even more, and always kept
it by his side through many subsequent battles.
Several
years later, after his retirement and return to the America, the soldier
decided to pass on the Zippo lighter to his comrade and also friend who had
saved his life in that jungle battle years ago.
Unfortunately,
the comrade dropped it in a battle, and a local villager found it. Despite many
efforts, the villager was not able to return the Zippo to the soldier's
comrade.
Now,
knowing the touching story behind it, the villager feels that the Zippo lighter
should be passed on to a deserving next owner.
