Condition Continued: There is a very small scuff just off the top edge of the rear inside cover, not near to the actual map. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There are two sections of photographs, eight pages in each of them. There is a light bit of amber spotting off the top edge of one of the pages of photographs. There are two page flaws, both of which I consider fairly minor. On the first 150 or so pages there are a number of short and light impressions (colorless lines) that go about three quarters of the way down the page, just along the margin at the outer edge. The lines are equidistant from one another and do not reach the print in any instance. It's unusual and my guess would be that something pressed lately against them. It's not a rippling kind of thing because the areas of the pages that are affected are flat. If you run your finger over then you can only barely feel a slight difference, very slight. After page 150 these little lines continue but there are only five of them coming down from the top edge, so only coming about 1/5th of the way down the page. These light lines are not on the pages with photographs, those pages are of a slightly different material which I guess prevented them from forming. If you want a photograph of what I have been laboring to describe feel free to contact me. The second flaw is a thin crease just above the bottom corners of pages 67-194. A very slight curving there, probably from a light bump, is the cause of these thin creases, all in the same place, far from the print. I'm not seeing any top corner creases. There are no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.
You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. It's done pretty well. I see one teeny tiny tear (1/16th of an inch) off the front top edge and one of similar size off the rear top edge. There is a very small spot off the bottom edge of the front cover and another off the bottom edge of the rear cover. You can see what I'm describing in the photos. The spine is slightly toned. There is a little bit of crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in solid shape, no tears, some light amber spotting, a light crease at the rear top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned.

Stated First Edition. This is a very rare 1961 Doubleday &  Company first edition. I found only one other for sale on the Internet. That one has some issues (stampings and tape marks) and is selling for approximately $140.00 in total.
From the dust jacket: 'In short, here is an almost irresistible narrative that dodges in out of history and is the most reliable available guide, philosopher, and friend, if you want to learn about rum, coffee, or cane, or only about a dried toad for Obeah rites.'
