Sawgrass Expressway guide sign.
Up for sale today is this Florida guide sign for Sawgrass Expressway, complete with Cecil B. Sawgrass, the tree frog mascot of the 21-mile toll road. Made to the exact state standard used in the 1986 along this bit of Florida state road 869 near Ft. Lauderdale. Signs just like this one, with Cecil welcoming travelers to the expressway, were posted at the entrance to the road, as well as along the entire length of the road until 2005.
An original of these is not only very rare to find scrapped, but is a herculean effort to transport; They have also been long-retired from active use. So here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without chancing legal trouble... or a hernia.
This is a non-reflective sign, printed on steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts. It is 12 by 9 inches and weighs about 2 pounds, 12 ounces. It is a faithful rescaling of the original sign, which is about eight feet tall in freeway use. (If you would like a different size version, please see my other auctions.) It is a high quality, durable sign made of heavy steel. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
