Margate is situated on the North East corner of the Kent Coast and is fortunate in having willing and brave men ready to respond to the call, to rescue life at sea. The willingness is as evident today as it was back in the middle part of the 19th Century. Over the years, as is to be expected, improvements to the lifeboats have been made, from the old sailing and pulling type, to the present day state of the art lifeboats, and in consequence the cost of the boats rose with the improvements - from approximately £160.00 to £629,121.00, which was the price of the Mersey Class Life Boat when built in 1991. Margate was fortunate over the years in having people devoted to the job - putting in time not only as crew, but as back-up administration and shore help.
