After opening up I found that the 2 mats are acid-free from a professional framer, and the back of this woodblock clearly shows the bleed-through from woodblock printing. As to the age I'm still doing research. I have found only two others and the sizes are smaller. Also, there is a small bug and some debris from my opening, and I don't want to open it again sorry.
Excellent condition one minor dent mark 1/4" from her left shoulder. maybe from the block printing. The age I'm guessing from the 1980's. As to the wood block the picture is professionally framed so to verify I will need to open it up (which I have done). I know very little about this type of artwork. However, needless to say, this is a fine example of Japanese artwork. Please ask questions. I will verify soon with pics of the back of the print (Done).
1. Kitagawa Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Utamaro is regarded as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of all time. Considered by many the finest master of bijin-ga (pictures of beauties), Utamaro was able to convey subtle aspects of mood and personality that go beyond physical beauty. His evocative, sensual beauties have justly earned him an international reputation.

2.   Japanese Woodblock Reprint

Young Woman Blowing a Poppin

Series; Ten Classes of Women's Physiognomy

Young Woman Blowing a Poppin - Lovely reprint with excellent detail. A wonderful image of Utamaro's girl blowing a glass poppin, a type of noisemaker. Her beautiful kimono features an intricate pattern of rose and white checks covered with delicate blossoms. The background features shimmering mica emulating the original.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 15 1/4" x 10 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Excellent overall
