John Watts de Peyster (1821-1907) was soldier, author and philanthropist descended from early Dutch settlers in New York State. The book is inscribed inside its rear cover To My Baby's favorite uncle from his affectionate Brother-in-Law, and inked at top of the inside rear cover is L S Livingston. (The de Peyster and Livingston families were long connected, J Watts de Peyster's son was named Johnston Livingston de Peyster.)
