Banksia spinulosa - Hairpin Banksia

The Hairpin Banksia is one of the most widely cultivated Banksias and is a favourite with people who grow natives making a magnificent cut flower and as with all Banksias is popular with nectar seeking birds and bees.

Originally from Victoria and New South Wales it is frost tolerant and will stand temperatures of at least -7°C.  It is a neat upright and compact bush with very long narrow serrated leaves growing to about 1.8m in height and 50cm in width at maturity.  The yellow-amber coloured  flowers are 12-15cm long with hooked purplish stamens.
 
It makes an excellent bonsai subject. Please note that Banksia "Birthday Candles" is a hybrid form of this species that will not grow true to form from seed.
