Stein
Here is a rugged metal American-made ale horn. It appears to have been produced using a primitive casting process, because its surface has some irregularities and rough spots. The weight (about 1.1 lb - 0.5 kg) and feel suggest pewter, possibly a traditional tin alloy fortified with copper and antimony, as used for cups and the like. There are some markings near the top on the side right of handle, but other than a clearly incised "USA" they are a bit hard to make out: just to the left is what looks to be RWP in a circle and to the left of that the image of a man in an oval. This suggests possible manufacture by Wilton Products between 1950 and 1989. Its descendant, the present Wilton Armtale company manufactures some mugs, no ale horns though as far as I could determine, and apparently the modern mugs are made of a lighter shinier aluminum based alloy, called Armtale. This mug is about 5" (11.5 cm) tall and 3.5" (9 cm) wide at the top. It is in very good condition, but does have some production imperfections, as noted earlier, some scuffs from use, and "Dan" etched on the side facing the right-handed drinker. I'm sure a skilled engraver could buff out the name and substitute a new one. It makes a marvelous collectible, and is quite serviceable; designed for the light drinker, though, it can hold just a tad over 8 oz (0.25 l). We'd be happy to answer whatever questions we can, or email additional pictures. Thank you very much for looking!
