Magnification

This is commonly described as a pair of numbers e.g. 12 x 25mm. The fi rst number used to describe binoculars always refers to magnifi cation so they magnify up to 12 times. The second number is the diameter of the objective lens in millimetres.

Field of view

The field of view is the widest dimension you can see when looking through the binoculars. Relative brightness This is obtained by squaring the diameter of the exit pupil. The greater the relative brightness is, the brighter the image will be.

Exit pupil

The exit pupil refers to the size of the shaft of light transmitted to the eye. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image will appear, which is an important consideration when using binoculars in dark conditions.

Lens aperture

This controls how much light is collected by the binoculars. A wider aperture is important when viewing objects in low light settings.
