2010 $1 Lachlan Macquarie Coin & Stamp Presentation Folder

Two hundred years ago Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824) landed in the colony of New South Wales. His instructions from the Secretary for the Colonies, Viscount Castlereagh were 'to improve the Morals of the Colonists, to encourage Marriage, to provide for Education, to prohibit the Use of Spirituous Liquors, to increase the Agriculture and Stock, so as to ensure the Certainty of a full supply to the Inhabitants under all circumstances'. It was these instructions that Macquarie was to implement while governor from 1810-1821.

During his term as governor, Macquarie was to provide an important vision for society. In a colony where nine out of every 10 people were, or had been, convicts he sought to harness every available skill and talent and build a new society. In an age when former convicts were treated as social outcasts Macquarie believed that all their rights should be reinstated and that they should be fully restored to society.

In the public domain Macquarie began an ambitious building program in 1816. He drew up a list of 10 public buildings that were still required in the colony at the beginning of 1817.

Among these were a new government house, a convict barracks, new church, court house and for Sydney. By the time he left office in 1821, 265 public works had been carried out.

Prosperity would judge his efforts kindly. In the words of the Governor of New South Wales, professor martie Bashir, he was : '' a man who turned a squalid penal colony into n infant nation - a fledgling democracy, robust, self-confident and proud".
