EXQUISITE LARGE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON HAND PAINTED SAINT NICHOLAS WITH KIOT 19th CENTURY!

Offered is an exquisite and impressive antique Russian orthodox icon of Saint Nicholas flanked by Jesus and the Virgin Mary. It is hand painted with tempera 

colors and levkas (gesso) on wooden panel. The icon is in wooden kiot (icon case). Dovetailed into the back of the board are panel cross members or "back slats" 

for stability and to prevent warping (pictured). These back slats were used in Russian icons prior to 1880/1890. Subsequent to 1880/1890 advances in materials 

negated the need for these cross members. Size with kiot: 44.5 cm X 38 cm X 4 cm (18 X 15 X 2 in.); size of icon without kiot: 36.5 cm X 30 cm X 2 cm 

(14 X 12 X 1 in); weight with kiot is 1760 g (3.9 lbs). Provenance is Athens estate. The icon is in its original condition without any restoration whatsoever. 

There is some chipping to the paint around and on St. Nicholas' head which you can see in the photos. Overall a great piece in very nice condition.

Saint Nicholas 

Saint Nicholas (15 March 270 – 6 December 343) was a historic 4th-century Christian saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre, part of modern-day Turkey) in Lycia. Because of the many 

miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Miracle worker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them 

out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, itself from a series of elisions and corruptions of the transliteration of 

"Saint Nikolaos". Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, pawnbrokers and students in various cities and countries around Europe.
