Roscoe Sarles: A native of New Albany, Indiana who is credited with six wins in IndyCar competition in the early days of racing. Perhaps Sarles biggest win was a 250-mile event at the board track in Beverly Hills, California in 1921. Sarles’ best finish at the Brickyard was 2nd that same year to Tommy Milton.
Sarles was an American race car driver and finished in the AAA Championships as follows: 1919 4th place, 1920 5th place, 1921 2nd place, 1922 6th place. In 1921 Sarles won $10,000 in a race at the famed Indy 500 driving his Duesenberg Straight 8. Race car driver Cliff Durant of Los Angeles was supposed to be in the race but backed out and Sarles went in his place. The race was to dedicate the brand new Kansas City Speedway and Sarles lost control of his car, crashed into another driver, jumped the rail and fell twenty-five feet, pinning him in. The car burst into flames and Sarles was burned to death before he could be rescued. Eight others were injured in the chain reaction collision.
