These were used to store and carry ammunition , they used a small removable " key " just like a thanksgiving ' canned ham ' to open ,..

Designed for one - time use -
once you removed the lid , it could not be put back in place
( Unlike a normal ammo box )
These are very rare , as nobody bothered to save them ,

Once in a great while you might run across one of these cans for pistol or rifle and carbine ammo , ......but when was the last time you saw one for the 12 GA trench / riot gun !

A must for advanced collectors !
