This most accomplished oil on canvas laid to panel measures 35 5/8” x 25 5/8” framed; 32” x 22” actual and is signed Marjory Adams on the front with Exhibition label on the back dated 1947, with the name of the sitter and the artist. Marjory Madden Adams Darling (1897-1984)lived most of her life in Laguna, California and was the wife of artist William darling. A most accomplished painter in her own right, she  won over 100 awards for her portraiture over the years.  It is beautifully rendered with refined brushwork, modernist splashes of color and a confident handling of textures, light and skin tones. The work is housed in its original carved metal leaf and gilt wood frame in the arts and crafts manner and it is in very fine condition with stable paint, superficial dirt and no losses. FROM A FAMILY MEMBER:  The artist was my great-aunt, Marjory Adams Darling. Marjory was a portrait artist who lived in Laguna Beach, CA until her death in 1984. She was married to another prominent artist, William Darling.
