Before the Ashanti region was annexed by the British in 1901, into what is now Ghana, it was one of the most powerful kingdoms of pre-colonial Africa, and music played a vital role in Ashanti society. The tracks on this 1979 Folkways release range from genres found at the court of chiefs to highlife.
