Recorded as he turned 81, and in the midst of a sustained outburst of recording and performance activities which came to a close only with his death in 1962, Bruno Walter's swan song with the Beethoven symphony cycle leading the Columbia Symphony Orchestra stands among the many pinnacles of performances of Beethoven's awe inspiring symphony-scapes. The 7 CD set on Sony Classical Masters Series collects the symphonies recorded in 1961, with choice additions of the virtuoso Violin Concerto featuring the magnificent Zino Francescatti with a bonus disc devoted to the rehearsal sessions for several of the symphonies providing a fascinating perch to these recordings.
