This is a Vintage Scottish Sterling Wishbone and Thistle Brooch.

At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England.  These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.  At that time, we had a variety of other antique Mauchline ware listings, all purchased on the most recent, or on prior trips to England.

Among these items are quite a variety of hallmarked sterling and gold pieces.   At the time of the original listing for this brooch, this is one of five Scottish brooches being listed with one of several traditional Scottish motifs including thistle, a stag, and a dirk.  Two of the five have a full set of Scottish sterling hallmarks, and one is tested, but unmarked sterling.  With each of the listings, a composite photo of all five brooches is included.  It is offered for comparison ONLY for prospective buyers that may wish to consider multiple brooches; each brooch is listed separately.

This listing is for a vintage Scottish brooch in the shape of a good luck Wishbone, overlaid with a Thistle, both common motifs on Scottish jewelry.  The thistle is set with a, four MM brown-red citrine colored gemstone.  My assumption is that the stone is paste. The brooch is not marked with a maker's mark nor the silver purity.  The buyer told me the piece had been tested as sterling silver, and I performed my own test to verify that the metal is sterling silver.

The photos are close-ups. The size relative to both a US dime, and a ruler is shown in oneof the photos. The brooch is 1 3/16" tall with a maximum width of 1/2".  x 1 3/4". The brooch weighs 2.47 grams.

We do not know the age of the brooch specifically.  The brooch has a "modern" locking clasp.  My understanding is that the locking clasp was invented around 1910, and came into pervasive usage over the next decade or so.

Condition

The brooch is in excellent condition.
