This is a rare, antique Kuba Bongo mask which is closely related to the Kuba Bwoom mask and which is hand carved from wood and decorated with cowrie shells, glass beads, pigment, a small piece of copper, fiber, remains of feathers and the remains of animal hair. This mask was collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was made by the Kuba tribal people and was meant to be worn only by men of the dance society. The Kuba tribe uses over twenty different types of masks. This Kuba Bongo mask measures 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide. This Kuba made artifact is in great used condition but there is a long crack which was tribally repaired and traveled along one side of the mask and a little into the forehead area and through the top bar on top of the head. The top of the helmet has the remains of the feather decorations which have worn off and the bottom inside of the helmet has what remains of the animal hair decoration which once hung down but now is folded under. A few missing cowry shells. This antique Kuba mask has a highly intriguing tribal geometrical almost stained looking design across the face and forehead and also a beaded geometrical design at the base of the back of the head. This antique Kuba mask would make a fine addition to any African art collection.
