This particular Solid Sterling Silver Birmingham Hallmark Toast / Letter-Rack is in Extremely Fine condition for a 117 year old antique, with minimal age related wear the entire set is very solid ready for use or display, with clear dating & silversmith hallmarks it is in Excellent condition with no known faults. The workmanship is a rare feature and should not disappoint.

Along with a weight of 60.40 grams the condition is 100% original as received. There are some light signs of use and handling but with virtually no rubbing to the hallmarks or the ornate engraving. HISTORY
- Silversmith William Aitken, Vyse Street, Birmingham England / HM 1891..1894 1900..1907 (registered Feb 1901) / Bowl, candlestick, cigarette case, claret jug, dish, egg cup, grape scissors, ink stand, mustard, napkin ring, salt, spoon, tazza, tea service, vase, vesta
- William Aitken entered this mark with the Birmingham Assay Office in August 1904. His premises at this time were located at the Eagle Works, 78, Summer Row, Birmingham. His earlier premises were recorded at 37-38, Vyse Street, Birmingham.
- The sterling alloy originated in continental Europe and was being used for commerce as early as the 12th century in the area that is now northern Germany.
- In England the composition of sterling silver was subject to official assay at some date before 1158, during the reign of Henry II, but its purity was probably regulated from centuries earlier, in Saxon times.
- Some countries developed systems of hallmarking silver - To indicate the purity of the silver alloy / To identify the silversmith / To note the date and/or location of the manufacture
