Connection Overview:
The Wind Generator will generate DC power and is able to charge 12V batteries with either a rectifier or our  SolarWind Hybrid RX Charge Controller. Note: the 12V Batteries above are not included.

If your home or farm is connected to the power grid, on windier days you may be able to sell excess power generated by your wind turbine to your utility. At other times when the turbine cannot generate all the power you need, you would buy power from the grid. This concept is called net metering.

Even if net metering is unavailable, you might be able to reduce your power bills by using the electricity generated by wind turbines, and become less dependent on your utility.

Why do we need a Dump Load?

As we all know, wind turbines are designed to operate in a loaded situation so it can generate power to either the battery / the grid. It is, however, not designed to operate under a no load (open circuit) situation because doing so will put a lot of strain on the wind turbine components and speeds out the wear out process which will eventually will lead the turbine to self destruct. Therefore, a dump load is required to burn out the extra energy when the battery is full OR when the grid is out. Because of this, a dump load is also known as a "diversion load".

This dump load is designed to work with GreenergyStar SolarWind Hybrid RX Charge Controller. It will work with the Apollo & Patriot Wind Turbines as well.

Introduction

To maximize our energy harvest with solar panels, we need to optimize the angle of our solar panel so its surface is perpendicular to sunlight. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun will reach its greatest height at noon on the summer solstice (June 21) and lowest on the winter solstice (Dec 21). The elevation angle will vary depending on the location’s latitude. For example, in Los Angels, California (Latitude 34° 3' N), the solar noon elevation will span from 11.0° to 57.8°.

Ideally, if we want to capture the most sunlight on a yearly basis, we will tilt the panel to the sun’s “average” elevation, which is equal to the latitude of your location. In our example, the arrays should be tilted at about 34° from the ground and oriented to true south.

Of course, there are always exceptions. If your area has overcast winters and sunny summer then you will probably want to lower that angle to optimize for summer exposure. Another option is to use adjustable mount. The rule of thumb is to minus 15° from your location’s latitude in summer and plus 15° to latitude in winter. Adjusting twice a year on spring and fall will roughly increase efficiency by 5%.

With our 2 way adjustable solar panel pole mount, the built-in protractor will allow you to easily adjust the angle of your panels to any degrees. This way, you will be able to maximize you solar energy harvast.

Introduction:

The charge controller regulates the flow of electricity from the solar modules / wind generator to the battery bank. When the battery bank is low, the charge controller feeds all of the electricity from the array / generator to the batteries. When the batteries reach a state of full charge, the charge controller stops or redirects the supply of electricity to prevent overcharging. Modern charge controllers have the ability to hold the battery bank in a "float" state of charge if the bank is not being used. At night the charge controller prevents a reverse flow of current from the batteries to the modules. There are three basic types of charger controllers - series, shunt and pulse-width-modulated. A series controller, the most basic type, acts as a switch to disconnect and re-connect the solar modules to the battery bank. A shunt type controller redirects the current from the solar modules - either by simply short circuiting the array or by directing the current to some other load. Pulse-width-modulated charge controllers, the most up-to-date type, maintain the battery bank in a float state of charge. "Float" is the voltage level just below gassing voltage. Keeping the batteries in this state of charge delivers their best possible life without using excessive electrolytic.

Many people have asked about power point tracking and whether it has any real advantages. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) converts the difference between a solar modules rated voltage, (usually 17 volts) and a battery banks charging voltage (up to 14.7 volts) into usable charging current. Often claims are made for up to a 30% increase in charging current. This gain, however, is possible under a very limited set of conditions. The "extra" module voltage is there for a reason: to allow for real world use of the solar module, i.e. the voltage drop caused by the array wiring and other components, including the charge controller, between the solar array and batteries. Also, high ambient temperatures cause the solar module to drop in voltage further reducing this "extra" voltage


Having said that, there are times when the voltage difference will be high enough to provide extra current to a battery bank utilizing this type of charge controller. Cold weather comes to mind, as well as low battery bank voltage. Under these conditions, it can be possible to get as much as 10% to 30% more current from your solar modules.
