Group of 15 hard plastic miniature figurines, circa 1961, ANIMALS OF AFRICA. The original series was issued by Coca Cola exclusively distributed in East Africa as a campaign of awareness for conservation and required redeeming specially marked bottle caps of Coca Cola to obtain a single figure. Those however had thicker bases and were marked with the Coca Cola logo. These are the mostly identical to that series, same size and material and sculpting with the exception of the hippo and warthog with variation (separate photo for comparison only of the figures in this set with the Coca Cola marked editions) and on a thinner unmarked base. Some references cite these as the 2nd series though I have yet to see any documentation supporting this. The major unsolved mystery is who actually manufactured them and the evidence that I have noted would indicate a company within the UK since when they do appear on the secondary market tend to be offered by UK vendors. One thing for certain is the detail is incredible. Species include: Reticulated Giraffe, African Buffalo, African black rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Zebra, Warthog, Eland, Oryx antelope, Greater Kudu antelope, Baboon, Leopard, Cheetah, Lioness, Spotted Hyena, and Crocodile. All are in very good condition with no damage.
