The stones are crafted into the oval shape and hand-polished by local artisans. The oval egg-like lingam shape is considered a phallic symbol of Shiva, the famous Hindu god. The lingam has been used for centuries in religious practices of Hinduism. They are considered very sacred and powerful in Indian culture and seen as a symbol of fertility. The body of the stone represents male energy, the markings or "Yoni" represent female energy, so the Lingam represents the union or harmony of the two.
