Smith, Jack and Piero Heliczer. The Dead Language Presents a Benefit for Flaming Creatures

New York: Dead Language Press, 1963. 7 x 7 1/2" poster, letterpress printed on pink card stock. Designed by Piero Heliczer.

Piero Heliczer's poster for this benefit for the Jack Smith film Flaming Creatures, held at Jerry Joffen's loft on March 9, 1963 - in advance of the film's debut at Bleecker Street Cinema on April 29th. As described in J. Hoberman's article on the film, It was that this event that Jonas Mekas saw the film and then wrote a glowing review of it in the Village Voice, adding considerable momentum to a film that was already being shown in drafts to members of the NY scene. The simple but very striking typography of the placard is among Heliczer's best design work: the pink paper stock is similar to the paper utilized for the covers of some copies of Heliczer's The Battle of the Marne, and established a certain tone.

Faint fingerprint to left margin, and small area of orange discoloration to the paper (likely as found, since that bit of orange color is the same as the alternate covers for The Battle of the Marne), a couple faint creases, but a clean , bright, near fine example.  [25940]
