Jan Arnošt Smoler (German: Johann Ernst Schmaler; born in Merzdorf (a former village in Boxberg, Saxony) on 3 March 1816; died in Bautzen on 13 June 1884) was a Sorbian philologist and writer. He played a vital role in revitalizing the Sorbian languages in the 19th century. He also supported a form of Pan-Slavism.

Sorbs (Upper Sorbian: Serbja, Lower Sorbian: Serby, German: Sorben), known also by their former autonyms Lusatians and Wends, are a West Slavic ethnic group predominantly inhabiting their homeland in Lusatia, a region divided between Germany (the states of Saxony and Brandenburg) and Poland (the provinces of Lower Silesia and Lubusz)

Johann Ernst Schmaler; 3 марта 1816, Мерцдорф (Лучо), Пруссия — 13 июня 1884, Баутцен, Саксония) — серболужицкий лингвист, основоположник серболужицкого языкознания[3], публицист, редактор и издатель газеты Serbske Nowiny и журнала Łužičan, основатель серболужицкого книжного издательства и книжного магазина, один из основателей организации «Матицы Сербской», организатор строительства «Сербского дома» в Баутцене — центра национальной и культурной жизни серболужичан, один из лидеров серболужицкого национального возрождения XIX века[4][5]. Участник Славянского съезда в Москве и Санкт-Петербурге 1867 года.
