ABOUT:
This extremely rare & important book-report contains the statistical results of The First Russian Imperial Census of 1897, for the KARS REGION (Oblast).
The Russian Imperial Census of 1897 was the first and the only census carried out in the Russian Empire (Finland was excluded). It recorded demographic data as of 28 January [O.S. 15 January] 1897.
Previously, the Central Statistical Bureau issued statistical tables based on fiscal lists (ревизские списки).
The second Russian Census was scheduled for December 1915, but was cancelled because of the outbreak of World War I one and a half years earlier (in July 1914).[1] It was not rescheduled before the Russian Revolution. The next census to take place in Russia only occurred at the end of 1926, almost three decades later.
The
Kara region lies between 39 55 and 41 37 northern latitude and between
11-20 and 13-20 east longitude from Pulkovo, having its borders: in the
west the Batumi region composing at the census part in Kutaisi province
and Turkey, in the east Erivan province, in southern Turkey and in the north Tiflis province. The
Kara region is a mountainous country severely divided by separate
ranges, cut by river valleys from which the most important ones run
along the Kura River, Kars-chay and Araksu. The
total number of residents of the region was determined by the census on
January 28, 1897, at 290,654 people and on 296.1901 permanent.
Kars Oblast (Russian: Карсская область, Karsskaya Oblast) was one of the oblasts of the Caucasus Viceroyalty of the Russian Empire between 1878 and 1917. Its capital was the city of Kars, presently in the Republic of Turkey. The governorate bordered with the Ottoman Empire, Batum Oblast, Tiflis Governorate, Erivan Governorate, and from 1883 to 1903 the Kutais Governorate. It covered all of Turkey's present provinces of Kars and Ardahan and the northeastern part of Erzurum Province as well as a small part of Armenia.
According to the Russian Empire Census of 1897, the Oblast was populated with 25.3% Armenians, 21.9% Turks, 14.8% Kurds, 11.2% Caucasus Greeks, 10.3% Karapapaks, and 7.7% Russians.
