This is a Tuareg handmade mixed metals veil weight with a leather loop for hanging. This veil weight measures 9.20 inches long from the top of the leather thong to the bottom of the pendant by 2 inches wide. This veil weight has a smooth back side. Great condition. In Tuareg society women and men wear the veil. Wearing the indigo blue colored veil called Alasho as a facial covering originates from the belief that the veil wards off evil spirits. I am proud to offer this beautiful, large, Tuareg, tribal, metal, veil weight called an Assrou N'Swoul which are traditionally used by the wealthier Tuareg women to hold their head cloths in place. These Assrou N'Swoul veil weights act as a counterbalance to keep their head cloths, veils or robes from being blown off by the Sahara's strong winds. Assrou N' Swoul translate as "the key that is thrown over the shoulder" because these veil weights are worn attached to veils which are then flung across and over the shoulder so that the weight hangs along the back of the body. The Assrou N' Swoul are always made to resemble the large decorative keys of camel saddlebag locks.
