The Hoshen was the breastplate worn by the Jewish high priests in the Holy Temple at Jerusalem. It was set with 12 colorful and translucent gemstones that represent each tribe of the 12 biblical tribes of Israel (children, sons of Israel). It is believed that the breastplate helped the High Priests to answer and judge the children of Israel that came to the temple
The Hoshen was related to the high powers of the priests and the ability to "tell the future" (divination). In Hebrew this is termed -"Urim and Tumim" - possibly "Light and Perfection" or "Perfect lights". The Rabbis understood the Urim and Thummim to be part of the breastplate and that its prophetic, oracular function came from light shining through the twelve gemstones mounted on the breastplate. Since each stone was inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes, Some believe the Urim were the lights, while the Thummim was a device or code that helped in interpreting the messages
