 The USS Catoctin was built as a merchant ship in Oakland, Calif, acquired by the USN and commissioned early in 1943. She spent WW II in the Mediterranean preparing for the invasion of southern France, was the communications ship for the 1945 Yalta Conference on the Black Sea, and accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea. Also in 1945 she transported US Marines to North China and was headquarters for negotiations with the Chinese Communists. Finally, she was decommissioned in 1947, struck from the Navy list in 1959 and scrapped in 1960.
