Stepanos Nazarian (Armenian: Ստեփանոս Նազարյան, Russian: Степанос Исаевич Назарян, 27 May [O.S. 15 May] 1812 in Tiflis - 9 May [O.S. 27 April] 1879 in Moscow) was an Armenian-Russian publisher, enlightener, historian of literature and orientalist.

He was born in the family of a priest. Graduated from the department of philosophy in the University of Tartu in 1840. In 1849 he became a professor of Persian and Arab literature in Moscow in the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages. He published a number of scholarly works and earned his doctoral dissertation on a work analyzing Ferdowsi's Shahnameh.

Under the influence of the European enlightenment movement and the Russian social movement of the 40's, Nazarian increasingly began writing against the feudal system and its ideology. In the 50's he became the leader of the Armenian enlightenment movement. Between 1858 and 1864 he published in Moscow the influential magazine Hyusisapayl (Aurora Borealis), that had a great effect on the development of progressive public thought in Armenia. He criticized serfdom and clerical power for the spiritual revival of the Armenian people; however, he refused to classify his actions as part of a broader class struggle. Nazarian advanced the idea of public education in the new enlightenment era as well as the replacement of Classical Armenian (grabar) with the new literary Ashkarhabar. He was a supporter of deism and promoted Russian and foreign literature. Translated many of Friedrich Schiller's dramas.

Ստեփանոս Նազարյան (1812, մայիսի 15, Թիֆլիս - 1879, ապրիլի 27, Մոսկվա (թաղված է տեղի հայկական գերեզմանատանը)), հայտնի հայ խմբագիր, լուսավորիչ, արևելագետ, գրականակագետ, փիլիսոփայական գիտությունների թեկնածու։

Ծնվել է 1812 թվականին Թիֆլիսում։ Սովորել է Թիֆլիսի Ներսիսյան դպրոցում, որն ավարտել է 1827 թվականին։ Ուսումնառության ընթացքում Նազարյանը ոգեշնչվում է դպրոցի տեսուչ, ականավոր գրող և մանկավարժ Հարություն Ալամդարյանի գաղափարներով։ Դպրոցի տարիներին ընկերանում է Խաչատուր Աբովյանի հետ, որի հետ ընկերական կապը պահպանում են մինչև վերջ։

Որոշ ժամանակ աշխատել է Ներսիսյան դպրոցում որպես պատմության և աշխարհագրության ուսուցիչ։ 1832 թվականին մեկնում է Դորպատ (այժմյան Տարտուի համալսարանի հին անվանումն է), որտեղ սովորում է նախ պետական գիմնազիայում, և ապա համալսարանում։ Ապրելով ֆինանսապես նեղ պայմաններում՝ այնուամեայնիվ ավարտում է ուսումը 1840 թվականին և ստանում փիլիսոփայական գիտությունների թեկնածուի կոչում։

Դրանից հետո նա տեղափոխվում է Պետերբուրգ, զբաղվում արևելյան լեզուների ուսումնասիրությամբ։ 1842 թվականին Կազանի համալսարանում աշխատանքի է անցնում որպես հայոց լեզվի ամբիոնի վարիչ։

Նազարյանը 1849 թվականին պաշտպանում է դոկտորական դիսերտացիա, որի թեման էր Ֆիրդուսու «Շահնամեն»։ Այնուհետև Նազարյանը մեկնում է Մոսկվա և Լազարյան ճեմարանի արևելագիտական բաժնում պաշտոնավորում է որպես լատիներենի, արաբերենի և պարսկերենի դասախոս։ 1869 թվականին նա գալիս է Անդրկովկաս և ավելի մոտիկից է ծանոթանում հայերի կյանքին ու ապրելակերպին։ Որոշ ժամանակ մնում է Թիֆլիսում, 1870 թվականին վերադառնում է Մոսկվա, որտեղ ապրում է մինչև իր կյանքի վերջը։

Նազարյանը եռանդագին պայքար է մղում գրականության մեջ աշխարհաբար լեզվի արմատավորման համար։ Նա հսկայական դեր է հատկացնում հայոց նոր լեզվին ժողովրդի լուսավորության գործում։

Նազարյանի լուսավորական գործունեությունը լայնորեն ծավալվում է հատկապես նրա խմբագրած «Հյուսիսափայլ» ամսագրի ժամանակ (1858-1964), որի շուրջը համախմբվում են մի շարք լուսամիտ, առաջադեմ հայ մտավորականներ ու գործիչներ։ Ամսագրում լույս են տեսնում աշխարհաբար գրված և աշխարհիկ բովանդակություն ունեցող գեղարվեստական երկեր, ինչպես նաև գրաքննադատական ու գիտական բնույթի հոդվածներ։

«Հյուսիսափայլը» հսկայական դեր է կատարում լուսավորական գաղափարների տարածման գործում։ Նա համարձակորեն խարազանում է կղերաֆեոդալական հոսանքի ներկայացուցինչներին և ցույց տալիս նրանց բացասական դերը հայ հասարակական կյանքում։

Նազարյանը հեղինակ է մի շարք արժեքավոր երկերի։ Մեծ աժեք ունի Ֆիրդուսու «Շահնամեի» վերաբերյալ նրա աշխատությունը, «Հոգեբանություն» ձեռնարկը, «Առաջին հոգեղեն կերակուր» և «Հանդես նոր հայախոսության» աշխարհաբար լեզվի ընթերցարանները և այլն։ Գրել է նաև չափածո երկեր, որոնցից նշանավոր է հայրենասիրական ոգով տոգորված «Մայրենի լեզու» ոտանավորը
