PHOTO JPS LOTUS 78/ JUST ANOTHER BROKEN LOTUS - SILVERSTONE 12.9.87 I BELIEVE THAT COLIN CHAPMAN ONCE SAID THAT HIS IDEAL RACE CAR WOULD ONLY STAY TOGETHER FOR THE DURATION OF THE RACE AND WOULD BREAK AS SOON AS IT CROSSED THE FINISH LINE. IT COULD ALSO BE SAID THAT SOMETIMES HE PUSHED THAT CONCEPT TOO FAR AND SOME LOTUS GP CARS HAD A REPUTATION FOR FRAGILITY.THIS IS JPS LOTUS 78/ DRIVEN BY MARIO ANDRETTI TO 5TH PLACE IN THE '77 ARGENTINE GP AND GUNNAR NILSSON TO ANOTHER 5TH PLACE IN BRAZIL THAT YEAR. THE CAR WAS ALSO PEDALLED LESS SUCCESSFULLY BY HECTOR REBAQUE ALTHOUGH IT ENJOYED HAPPIER DAYS IN THE AURORA BRITISH F1 CHAMPIONSHIP. IT WAS ACQUIRED BY BILL FRIEND AND RACED BY HIS NEPHEW ROGER IN HISTORIC F1 EVENTS.ROGER IS SEEN ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES EXAMINING THE BROKEN REAR STUB AXLE THAT SENT THE LOTUS OFF INTO THE WEEDS FORTUNATELY WITHOUT DAMAGE TO CAR OR DRIVER......
