*** Contains Issue #'s 1-9 *** 'A first reaction is, “Oh, the old government agent working on cases involving costumed heroes plot.” Not so, though. The special agent is Cameron Chase, who has no time for heroes in tights, yet she herself seems to be developing powers. Chase isn’t a sympathetic character; she’s cool, calculating, and doesn’t give a damn. The series works despite this because D. Curtis Johnson’s plots are novel and intriguing, and the moody artwork by J. H. Williams III and Mick Gray captures exactly the right tone. Extra points of enjoyment for regular DC readers are many references to and appearances by characters both major (Batman in #7–8) and minor (Suicide Squad in #2–3). It’s a shame DC wasn’t prepared to recognize quality over initially slow sales for a series that had all the ingredients to make it a fan-favorite with a little push.
