This rug is intricately crafted: the strong silk fibers utilized in its production permitted its skilled weavers to weave more knots per square inch (KPSI) than wool carpets contain. A typical Persian or Oriental rug made of wool has between 100 and 300 KPSI - a typical 100% silk rug has between 300 to 600 KPSI. As a result, weaving the rug requires 3 to 4 times the amount of work. More time is spent weaving a silk carpet than a wool carpet of a similar size. This is one of the main reasons a silk rug costs at least double the price of a wool rug. Silk pile delivers more clarity in the design patterns and adds sheen and depth. A silk rug is a great option for adding a look and feel of luxury to any space. With proper maintenance tailored to its needs, this rug can last over 50 years.

Although quality silk rugs are robust pieces, cleaning should only be carried out by professionals due to their fine-grained materials.

Care & Maintenance: Silk Area Rugs

Since they are essentially a precious art form, silk carpets require care in order to maintain their longevity. Preventative maintenance is the best medicine for ensuring the long life of a silk rug. Silk loses up to 20% of its strength when it gets wet. Abrasive cleanings agents, hot water and steam cleaning can damage silk fibers, so professional cleaning is highly recommended for all silk rugs. On some occasions, professional cleaning may not be possible, as some rugs are more susceptible to having their colors run or bleed once washed. Below are general guidelines to follow for proper maintenance of a silk rug:

• Vacuum silk rugs regularly by using a brush-less suction head. Do not use beater or roller brushes.
• Gently sweep silk rugs with a broom to avoid damaging the fibers.
• Shake the rug outdoors to remove dust and debris.
• Cleans stains immediately before they set in and attach to the silk fibers.

Removing Solid Spills:

• Gently scoop solid debris from the rug using a spoon, but be careful not to scrape the fibers of the rug. Any scraping motion may tear the silk fibers.

Removing Liquid Spills:

• Absorb liquid spillage by pressing the affected areas gently with a clean white cloth.
• Pour club soda onto a clean cloth and blot the stain. Use a dry cloth to absorb excess club soda. Allow the area to air dry naturally. Do not use a heat source, as it may damage the silk.
• Apply a mixture solution of equal parts white vinegar and water to remove stains. Pour the solution on a clean cloth and blot the stain. Use a dry cloth to absorb the excess moisture and allow the area to air dry naturally. Do not use artificial heat to dry.
• Work from the outside inwards to limit the affected area.
• Use a cleaner designed for silk, working it in with a brush, sponge or cloth and then rinsing.
• When finished, blot thoroughly and brush the pile in the correct direction.
