🌳 In our interpretation of Rider-Waite’s The Tower, you’ll see a massively towering and twisted tree as the focus of this card. As lightning strikes the tree, we see two specters fleeing away from the chaos toward the ground with their arms outstretched. This scene inspires a sense of unsettling and chaos from the viewer.
.
💀 We chose a tree to represent the tower as it is a solid and reliable natural structure, however its roots are twisted through the shaky foundation of skulls that you see at the bottom of the card. Though this tree seems impervious to destruction, a simple bolt of lightning has the power to bring down its twisted bows and send its inhabitants fleeing for safety.
.
âš¡ The lightning represents a divine or celestial jolt of energy or change pulsing through the monotony, urging and sometimes forcing the subject to change paths or directions.
.
👻 The ghosts that flee the tree in this scene represent an absolute loss of control. Their colors are representative of yin and yang, the male and female spirits. The black ghost represents yin, or female spirit, and is a symbol of unconscious thought and action. The white ghost represents yang, or the male spirit, and is a symbol of the conscious thought and action. They are seen together to represent duality and conflict of thoughts and actions.
.
🔥 There are 22 individual flames depicted here -- 10 for the 10 points of the tree of life (seen on the tree itself) and 12 for the signs of the zodiac. Fire is an aggressive symbol signifying total loss or transformation, further solidifying this card’s importance and depth.
Notice how this card shows the fire burning from the top of the tree before the bottom. This indicates that change is long overdue, but still unexpected regardless of the signs one should have seen leading up to this event.
