PHOTO SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS CLASS 25 CONDENSING 4-8-4 3459 PAUSES AT KLOOFEIND A FEW MILES WEST OF BLOEMFONTEIN IN THE ORANGE FREE STATE (AS IT WAS THEN) BECAUSE OF THE ARID SEMI-DESERT CONDITIONS IN THIS PART OF SOUTH AFRICA AND THE CONSEQUENTIAL SHORTAGE OF WATER THE SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS INTRODUCED THE CLASS 25 4-8-4 CONDENSING LOCOMOTIVES IN THE 1950S TO OVERCOME THESE DIFFICULTIES THEY HAD ENORMOUS TENDERS INTO WHICH THE EXHAUST STEAM WAS RETURNED AND GRILLS ON THE SIDES AIDED THE PROCESS WHEREBY THE STEAM WAS CONDENSED BACK INTO WATER FOR RE-USE IN THE BOILER TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LACK OF DRAUGHT WHICH IS NORMALLY CREATED BY THE EXHAUST STEAM THE CLASS 25S HAD A STEAM DRIVEN FAN IN THE SMOKEBOX AND THESE ENGINES MADE A CURIOUS WHINING NOISE WHEN ON THE MOVE INSTEAD OF THE EXPECTED �CHUFF-CHUFFS� APART FROM A PASSING LOOP THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE MUCH AT KOOFEIND! 5/9/72 COPYRIGHT (Photograph and text in Extra Info) : R FISHERPHOTO PAPER THICKNESS NORMAL PHOTOGRAPH THICKNESS
