Early days in the City of Winchester and the County of Frederick, Virginia -- which encompasses the present and/or past communities of Brucetown, Clear Brook, Cross Junction, Gore, Hayfield, Jordan's White Sulphur Springs, Middletown, Star Tannery, Stephens City, Stephenson, and Whitacre -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this 30-page booklet.
The spiral-bound booklet is comprised of excerpts from three rare vintage books: Historical Collections of Virginia by Henry Howe (1845); New Roads in Old Virginia by Agnes Rothery (1929); and Virginia, a Guide to the Old Dominion, a WPA Writer's Program publication (1940). It is printed single-sided, with the print enlarged to fit the 8 1/2 x 11" 60# paper. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet.
The Howe history takes an 1845 look at the area, while the WPA book, offers a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes and sightseeing possibilities. Rothery's contribution shows a depth of knowledge, an understanding of the character of the people, and a love of Virginia.
Among the subjects discussed are: Early settlers; Washington's headquarters in Winchester in the French and Indian War; Fort Loudon, with a sketch; Major Peter Halphistine and Gen. Daniel Roberdeau; Lord Fairfax, his "Retainers" and his "No Women Allowed" policy; Anecdote involving Chief Justice Marshall; Grave of General Daniel Morgan; Battles at Winchester; Battle of Kernstown; Harmony Hall, Belle Grove and other old mansions; an Abundance of Apples; Hopewell Meeting House; Kenilworth, scene of the Battle of Stephenson's Depot; a Discussion of the Virginia aristocracy; connection with Winchester, England; the "new" South; Points of Interest including: the Public Square, the City Hall, Old Taylor Hotel, Mt. Hebron and other cemeteries, Christ Church and other churches; and other interesting bits of history.
