Marinette County, Wisconsin

and Menominee, Michigan

New! 37-Page Booklet

Early days in Marinette County, WI, are recalled through a mixture of    colorful tales, historic data and individual biographies in  this  meaty  little 8 1/2" x 11" spiral-bound 37-page booklet, printed single-sided on 60 # opaque paper. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. The information comes from a rare 1881 book, entitled History of Northern Wisconsin. We've enlarged the area on a map from the original book, and included it along with two other maps of historic interest.

Communities currently listed for this area by the National Association of Counties include: Amberg, Athelstane, Beaver, Beecher, Coleman, Crivitz, Dunbar, Goodman, Grover, Lake, Marinette (County Seat), Middle Inlet, Niagara, Pembine, Peshtigo, Porterfield, Pound, Silver Cliff, Stephenson, Wagner, and Wausaukee. (Some towns may not be mentioned in the booklet.)

Among the many subjects included are: Location and Natural Resources; Organization of Marinette County and a list of county officials; Indian traders -- Louis Chappee (Chappieu), William Farnsworth, and the remarkable "Marinette" for whom the county was named; the first saw-mills; the Great Fire and tornado of 1871; Relief after the fire; Newspapers; Churches; Societies; Manufacturers; Skeches of Marinette and Menominee; the Iron Industires; the Harbor at Menominee; John Quimby, one of the "fathers of Menominee"; the close ties between Menominee and Marinette; John G. Kittson, Menominee pioneer; and other interesting bits of history and trivia.

Attention Genealogists: This booklet contains biographies of many county residents of the late 1800s. Some of these are brief, but others include family members, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on news events. Those listed are: (last names alphabetical by first letter only): S.W. Abbott, Rev. J. R. Andrews, A.P. Anderson, John Aschen, Edgar Annis, F.J. Bartels (pix), Marcus H. Bice, Martin Bies, L.C.
