For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . 1957-1958 P.C.L. "Popcorn" Card #108 - BOB SCHMIDT [Actually Charles Dwight "Red" Adams] ~ 1958 Sacramento Solons from scarce collector-issued set by Ed Broder Little is known about this card and the set it comes from except that the card pictures a Pacific Coast League player from 1957 or '58 and was produced in the 1974 by collector and photography enthusiast Ed Broder. It is similar to (and probably inspired by) the popular Seattle popcorn cards issued 1954-68. The card measures approximately 2" by 3" and features a borderless (often miscut) black and white photograph on the front with player name, team, card number and set identification (P.C.L. "Popcorn" Cards) on the reverse. There are no statistics and no manufacturer's copyright. The card stock is thin but reasonably sturdy. This card represents one of the only Pacific Coast League cards for many players featured in the 1957-1958 Popcorn set, is an interesting item for longtime followers of the old PCL and quite tough to find for a collector's issue. Look closely for familiar parts of long-departed ballyards. *Bob Schmidt never played for the Sacramento Solons. He went from the minors (1957 with double-A Minneapolis) to the majors in '58 where he was an all-star (catcher) his rookie year! Note: one of our good customers and a PCL specialist (CroftyT) sent an interesting note: "...the uniform he seems to be wearing is from the 1958 SACTO uniforms because of the pinstripes that appear at his neckline. In 1959 SACTO switched over to a solid uniform with box-type lettering on front of jersey... Schmidt debuted with San Francisco [the major-league club] on April 16, 1958 and SFRAN had been a PCL team the year before... not quite sure how all that plays into this, but perhaps he wore this uniform by mistake when first reporting since he was likely assigned to the AAA-SFRAN team for 1958 out of Spring Training, until the team learned their move from New York had been approved..." --Thanks, Crofty! *Another eBay member (candlestickgiants) advises that the pictured player is actually RED ADAMS --Thanks to Zachariah Condition: Near-Mint
