Triang / Hornby Silver Seal CD Motor Upgrade Kit for Type 4/Class47/Tender-drive Steam locomotives.

This listing is for a brand new OO Gauge Triang / Hornby 'Silver Seal' ringfield motor conversion kit for UK outline diesel and tender-drive steam locomotives (see compatibility list below). It is ideal as a replacement for a dead, damaged or otherwise beyond repair silver seal ringfield motor.

Each HA8 kit includes*:

1 x high-quality replacement motor
1 x professionally-designed 3D-printed adaptor
1 x pinion gear
1 x length of heat shrink tubing

Unlike some cheaper kits available from other sellers, this kit uses a high-quality, high-torque motor with internal components designed for up to 14Vdc; so it's capable of handling DC and DCC track voltages. No diodes are required for either DC or DCC usage, and CV5/CV6 programming is optional (depending on your preferred running characteristics).

If you're running a DC layout and would like to use diodes to reduce the top speed of the motor, you can still do so. We've got quick and easy pre-assembled droppers and surface mount (SMD) or through-hole self-assembly kits for sale as separate listings. Please check out our other listings for options.

Installation

With this adaptor kit, replacing aged silver seal motors in Triang/Hornby OO gauge models is incredibly easy and straightforward. There is no need for any messing around with glue or fiddly shaft alignment.

You just remove the old motor assembly in its entirety, pop the new motor into the adaptor and fit the new pinion gear onto its shaft, fit the spacer, install the adaptor into the chassis using the original screws and wire it all up. Everything is lined up and ready to go!

This kit requires no permanent adaptation to be made to the motor bogie and therefore the original silver seal ringfield motor can be reinstalled at any time; the motor, adaptor and/or gear can also be replaced with ease, if ever the need arises.

Compatibility

This adaptor should work with all Triang / Hornby 'silver seal' ringfield motor-powered diesel and steam locomotive models.

If it doesn't fit you model, please let us know and we will either provide a refund or, where possible, redesign the adaptor to suit and provide a free replacement.

Important considerations

1. Our replacement motors are low-noise DC motors designed for CD/DVD drives. The output from a DCC decoder or a DC controller can sometimes exceed their voltage rating depending on how hard hard the loco is being worked. Whilst our own tests (and those of many others before us) show that these motors are capable of handling voltages higher than their rating, in order to avoid motor burn-out, prolong motor life and achieve prototypical speeds, we recommend:

For DC/Analogue use, speeds are kept low manually via the controller and a diode* voltage dropper should be used in order to reduce voltage going to the motor (as outlined in the instructions);

For DCC use, a decoder with CV5/CV6 functionality is strongly recommended and the CV values should be reduced in order to slow and protect the motor. If a decoder without CV5/CV6 adjustment is used, a diode* voltage dropper must be wired between the decoder output and the motor in order to reduce voltage going to the motor, however this will also require significant alteration of acceleration, deceleration and other motor-related CVs and may not result in ideal speed/control performance.

2. With all CD-style motor conversions, it is good practice to:

i) maintain very high speeds for relatively short periods only,

ii) keep running on steep inclines to a minimum,

iii) avoid coupled up with excessively long rakes of coaches/wagons, and

iv) where less robust 9mm or 10mm motors are fitted, resist the temptation to fit additional weight to the loco.

3. We recommend that locomotives fitted with can-style CD motors are:

Not run without a DCC decoder as ‘Locomotive 0’ on a DCC model railway layout (this is will lead to over-heating and rapidly ruin the motor), and

Not placed on the tracks whilst a high frequency track cleaner (such as the Gaugemaster HF-1/HF-2) is in operation. There have been some reports that the frequency can damage the motors, although it is not something that we have tested.
