This is a antique African Bamileke tribe metal double gong which is a simple but sacred instrument which was played with a wooden stick and was also the emblem of Kwifoyn, the male regulatory society of the Bamileke Peoples of the grasslands of Cameroon in Africa. The Kwifoyn society's governing complex usually adjoined or was next to the royal palace where the king resided and they worked with the king to rule the Bamileke People. The striking of wooden rods on the hollow metal gongs announced the beginning of ceremonies and were used for communication with the supernatural world and to connect with ancestors and deities. This African Bamileke tribe metal double gong measures 11.55 inches tall by 7.88 inches wide. Great antique rustic used condition with a rusty patina and one lower side of the double gong having a broken spot with some missing metal which is shown close up in the last photo.
