Celtic European Cup Winners 1967 – The Lisbon Lions Coin Display Gift Set

In 1967 Celtic completed their most glorious season by winning every competition entered: Scottish League, Scottish Cup, League Cup, Glasgow Cup and the European Cup. The climax of the season was the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the European Cup final played at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon on May 25, 1967. Celtic thus become the first British (and non-Latin) club to win Europe's most coveted trophy.

The team became known as the Lisbon Lions…

Celtic's style was the antithesis of the cynical, but highly effective, defensive style of Internazionale. Jimmy Johnstone described the teams style as "like the Dutch speeded-up".

Alessandro Mazzola opened the scoring for Inter with a 7th minute penalty, after Jim Craig brought down Renato Cappellini.

The Italians then retreated into their famous 11-man defense. Inter did not win a single corner and forced Celtic goalkeeper Simpson to make only one save; Celtic had two shots off the crossbar, and 49 other attempts on goal, 13 of which were saved by Italian goalkeeper Sarti, 17 were blocked or deflected, and only 19 were delivered off-target.

Craig made amends for his penalty mistake on 63 minutes, when he laid off the ball for Tommy Gemmell to fire home for the Celtic equaliser. With 83 minutes on the clock, Gemmell was allowed space, and he played the ball to Bobby Murdoch, whose long-range shot was deflected by Steve Chalmers past Giuliano Sarti into the net. 2-1 to Celtic, final score.

The display contains the complete set of six 1967 coins, namely: halfcrown, florin, sixpence, threepence, penny and halfpenny.

All of the coins are in Fine (or better) condition and the item is housed in a display protection case.

This would make a great Christmas or Birthday present for a Celtic fan.
