WEstinghouse micarta catalog (1962)
Technical & Application Information

Out-of-print, hard-to-find 8 1/2" x 11" paper catalog, 24 pages from the United States Plywood Corporation, New York, NY.  Date 1961 but taken from a compilation issued in 1962.

Asbestos ReferenceS:

Fire Resistant Micarta - this material gains it's fireproofing quality from asbestos and a fire resistant resin.  This fire resistant Micarta was recommended for use in public buildings, railroad cars, buses and ships.

Micarta could be bonded to an incombustible core for additional fire protection.  From the specifications, one of the cores given is an asbestos cement board.  More specifically in the literature it mentions 3/4" Marinite-36 which was a proprietary product from Johns-Manville, an asbestos cement board.

There is a paragraph that mentions the NEMA, Military, US Army Corps of Engineers, Veteran's Hospitals, etc. standards that Micarta meets.

Working with Micarta - clearly stated in the literature is the following, "Carpenters, builders, and fabricators can cut Micarta panels easily by using a portable power saw."  This could have potentially released asbestos fibers/dust into the air to be breathed in by unsuspecting workers.

United States Plywood Corporation was the national distributor for Micarta and produced this document.
