Technology & Engineering of Plastics/Composites (1973)

Out-of-print, RARE hardcover book with 405 pages, edited and senior authored by J. Gilbert Mohr of the Johns-Manville Fiber Glass Reinforcements Division, Waterville, Ohio.

The book is in GOOD condition!!  The book has minor wear from use and has no dust jacket. Book is an ex-library copy with the usual marking for such a book.  There are no locations of writing,  underlining or highlighting of the text that I could find from a cursory review.  It's still a very good book with plenty of life left in it!!

Asbestos References:
This book contains information on Plastic, Composites & Thermoplastics and mentions asbestos use in a few locations.

Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) - asbestos is listed as an ingredient.

In the Premix and Compound Molding Including BMC and Injection Molding of Thermosets Section - "Materials fall into four groups: resins, fillers, thickening agents and reinforcements."  Asbestos is described as both a filler and reinforcement. As a filler, "Asbestos helps prevent separation of the ingredients of polyester premixes during molding.  Asbestos also eliminates pre-gelation and spotting in low-profile systems...."   As a reinforcement, "Asbestos fiber reinforcement for premix is beneficial for bulking, providing maximum mix plasticity and good surface appearance."  "The most important factor in using asbestos is the necessity of opening the fiber to as nearly complete single-entity fibers as possible."

In the Injection Molding of Reinforced Thermoplastics Section (prepared by S. B. Spencer of the Johns-Manville Fiber Glass Reinforcements Division) - "The major reinforcements and fillers used in thermoplastics are glass fibers, asbestos, talc, and calcium carbonate."

Under the Table - Fillers Used in Thermoplastics, Chrysotile Asbestos "Remarks - In PVC, used in floor tile."  Anthophylite Asbestos  "Remarks - In PP (polypropylene), used almost exclusively in molded parts. Heat stability good."

Technical Data is given for Asbestos Filled Polypropylene under the Table Properties of Reinforced Polypropylene and Polyphenylene Sulfide.  (see photos).
