This leather journal consists of a detachable leather slip cover and a replaceable A6 insert book with pages of lined paper. The journal is refillable - you can use the cover with any A6 size diary, notebook, planner or sketchpad. As A6 is a common standard size you can obtain refills from your local store.
The cover is made of vintage cowhide. I should warn you that it is REAL LEATHER that has not been rolled, imprinted, textured or reconstituted in any way (unlike much of the so-called 'Real Leather' that is sold under that name). In consequence the leather covers have all the features you would expect to find on the hide of a working animal: wrinkles, creases, scars, scratches, blemishes etc. But each piece has different features and is consequently unique. If you like genuine leather of this kind, this could be the journal for you. But if you are unfamiliar with natural leather or prefer the perfection of synthetic or reconstituted leather PLEASE DON'T BUY one of these journals!
I love working with leather, but for ethical reasons I only use vintage leather for my books- ie leather from working animals that have come to the end of their lives.
The leather has been veg-tanned without the use of the polluting and toxic chromium salts commonly used in the leather industry.
The leather has been 'drum-dyed' with a natural organic dye that is derived from tree bark. The dye produces a spectrum of shades from very dark brown, through red, to a natural light tan, according to the strength of the mix. You can therefore choose from three shades or colours for your journal:
- Natural Light Tan
- Tuscan Red
- Dark Spanish Brown*

I have sewn the leather pockets of the cover with matching leather thong, using a traditional 'diamond' stitch.

The cover is supplied with one A6 insert book with pages of lined paper.
When your journal is full you can replace the insert book with a commercially available A6 planner, printed diary, sketchbook, or writing pad. Or you can order a replacement directly from me.
You are also welcome to purchase the cover alone and fit your own A6 book (this could save a lot on postage if your delivery address is outside UK).
This journal is an ideal size and shape for use as a travelling journal, and the tough binding will survive many journeys in the side pocket of a backpack! This is a tough and durable book that would make an excellent travelling journal, sketchbook or personal diary.
